Why is parking in town so difficult - and expensive?

Why do councils see fit to charge so much to park in their towns - do they not want to encourage traders to pay their extortionate shop and office rates? If you require long stay parking in particular they are a complete rip off. Brentwood in Essex charges £8.00 per day for all day parking - there's nothing there shop-wise so if I hadn't had to work there there's no-way I would have parked even for 1 hour - I think that's £1.50!! Complete rip-off.

I came across a fantastic website for people looking for long-stay parking and the best part is that it's currently free! All you do is register some basic details like your name, address, and contact details and then advertise your driveway or garage for rent at a price you set - on the flip side, you can look for a driveway or garage near where you work and get guarateed a parking space everyday! Have a look at www.rentanyspace.net when you get a chance and make the most of a great service!
